Ursprünge des Maserati Ghibli

The Origins of the Maserati Ghibli in the Sixties

The Origins of the Maserati Ghibli are astonishing- in the sixties, the car was not similar to the elegant limousine of today at all.

The Origins of the Maserati Ghibli

The Origins of the Maserati Ghibli can be found in the sixties. Maserati Ghiblis (internal name: Tipo AM 115) were produced between autumn 1966 and end of 1973 by the Italian manufacturer Maserati. This name originates from the hot Saharan wind “Ghibli”.

Modern Maserati Ghibli

The Maserati Ghibli as racy extension of the brand

The history of the Maserati Ghibli reaches back to the sixties. At this point in time, the car manufacturer extended its series of 8-cylinder vehicles. It already contained the four-door limousine Quattroporte as well as the four-seater Gran Turismo Maserati Mexico. What was missing was a two-seater sports car: the Maserati Ghibli.

The design of the Ghibli was developed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and features a strikingly long engine hood and a long sloping rear. In 1968, the model got an open-top brother in the Maserati Ghibli Spyder.

Initially, the Maserati Ghibli featured a 4,7-liter dohc-alu-V8 with 310 to 330 HP. From 1970, an upgrade to the engine brought more engine displacement of 4,9 liters. This made a performance of 335 HP and a top-speed of 280km/h possible.

To this day, the Maserati Ghibli is a sought-after vintage car. However, the price increase is pretty moderate compared to other coupés of its time. The more scarce Spyder version of the Maserati Ghibli sells at high prices due to its rarity.

The modern Maserati very clearly differs from the older models, as it is a four-door limousine now. The engine was throttled to a 3-liter-V6 bi-turbo engine. However, the addition of modern security measures like a collision warning system as well as the elegant appearance and the spacious design offer a comfortable and classy driving pleasure in the Maserati Ghibli.
