Lamborghini LM002 versus Lamborghini Urus

Monday, 12. October 2020 | Michelle Zumstein

With the Lamborghini Urus, the Italian manufacturer wants to make an impact on the SUV market. But what is the difference to the predecessor Lamborghini LM002 that did not turn out successful and will Lamborghini succeed in the SUV market this time?

The Lamborghini LM002

The brand with the bull tried entering the SUV market in the year 1986 already. Back then, the Lamborghini LM002 was launched. It was the result of an order by the US company Mobility International Technology. Lamborghini had to develop a Jeep successor for the US Army. The car ended up failing several tests and the development was stopped.

In 1980, the production of the Lamborghini LM002 was picked up again. The result was a production car with a 4,8-liter V12 engine with 375 HP. Despite a curb weight of 2700 kg, it managed to sprint from 0-100 km/h in 8,2 seconds. The Lamborghini LM002 was supposed to succeed primarily in the Arabian market, thanks to the massive and aggressive design.

After the production of the LM002, a LM003 version was planned. However, it did not make it past the planning phase. A singular Lamborghini LM004 was produced instead.

Lamborghini LM002 Side

Until today, only 301 vehicles were sold in total. This is probably related to the enormous fuel consumption. The Lamborghini LM002 consumes between 25.7 and 42.0 liter per 100 km. So, if you don’t want to spend a fortune on fuel, the Lamborghini LM002 probably is not the right car for you.

Now, the Italian manufacturer announced the Lamborghini Urus which will officially enter the market in spring 2018. The first Lamborghini SUV since the Lamborghini LM002. With the Lamborghini Urus, Lamborghini finally wants to make an impact on the market and reach new target audiences. To achieve this goal, Lamborghini has two big premieres in store.

On the one hand, the Urus will drive ahead of its SUV competitors with incredible 650 HP. Thanks to its four-liter V8 bi-turbo engine by Audi, the Lamborghini Urus earns its title of most powerful SUV with ease.

Therefore, the fuel consumption will be considerably lower compared to the LM002. In Addition, the Urus differs in the design as well. Typical Lamborghini-like edges interchange with smoother lines, giving the car a slightly more elegant look compared to other Lamborghinis.

The winner

To sum up, the Lamborghini Urus seems to have a high chance of impacting the SUV market. It convinces through high performance and low consumption, exactly matching today’s needs. Finally, the Urus not only incorporates new design but also traditional values, clearly respecting the brand’s regulars and fans.
