Differences on the luxury car market between Germany and Switzerland

Which luxury cars are sought-after, vehicles of what brands are registered the most? We took a closer look at the newly registered luxury cars in Germany and Switzerland. Furthermore, we compared the development between 2016 and the first half of 2017.

Comparison of luxury cars by category between DE and CH (2016)

• In Switzerland, 2% more SUVs were registered compared to Germany
• In addition, 3% more limousines were registered in Switzerland
• Finally, a higher quote of super cars can be observed

• The second graph indicates that Germany registered 1% more sports cars
• Mini-Vans are 3% more popular than they are in Switzerland
• Furthermore, 1% more convertibles were registered in Germany

Comparison of luxury cars by brand between DE and CH (2016)

• The biggest difference in the registration of different brands shows with Mercedes-Benz. In Germany, Mercedes takes a 28,26% share of registered cars. This amounts to a difference of +12,62% compared to Switzerland
• However, with a share of 15,64%, Mercedes is the brand with the most registered vehicles in Switzerland as well. Besides Mercedes, the brands Range Rover, Porsche and Volvo are popular in both countries.
• The brands Audi and Tesla show large differences between the countries: While in Germany, the percentage of registered Audi cars is 3,35% higher than in Switzerland, the percentage of registered Tesla cars is 4,08% higher in Switzerland.
• There is also a difference in exclusive luxury cars. In Switzerland, more cars of the brands Aston Martin, Bentley, Bugatti, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, McLaren and Rolls Royce were registered than in Germany.

• The graph shows that in the year of 2017, an increase in the categories limousines, sports cars, convertibles and supercars can be observed.
• In Switzerland, 2% more sports cars were registered in the first half of 2017.

• In Germany, the number of registered SUVs, sports cars and convertibles has decreased.
• However, the share of limousines and supercars increased.
• In Germany, 3% more limousines were registered than in Switzerland. This accounts for a change of 6% in total.

• In Switzerland, more cars of the brands Aston Martin, Bentley, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Mercedes and Porsche were registered in the first half of 2017 compared to 2016.
• Less cars by Jeep and Range Rover were registered than in 2016.
• An interesting fact is that there seems to be a trend towards electric cars. Compared to all of 2016, there is already an increase of registered Tesla cars in the first half of 2017.
• Contrary to Switzerland, Germany does not see the same trend.
• Furthermore, the decrease of registered Jeep cars is apparent.
• Other than that, the proportions of car registrations of the different brands in Germany has remained approximately the same.
